SONGDO – On 01 May, the Independent Integrity Unit (IIU) and the Division of Portfolio Management (DPM) of the Green Climate Fund met with Mr. Gaurav Godhwani, Director and Co-Founder of CivicDataLab to discuss their ongoing work on data models, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning in monitoring climate risks.
Mr. Godhwani presented their machine learning project that monitored the floods in Assam, which affected 3 million of the region’s 30 million people. The project aims to address issues on government capacity and efficient project management and alleviate concerns regarding disbursements in the region.
The machine learning model will help identify relevant climate change hazards and vulnerabilities and potential risk mitigation strategies using data from various sources, including satellite imagery. Flood proneness, demographic factors, and access to infrastructure are all taken into account in the model’s algorithm.
The IIU, DPM, and CivicDataLab will plan more discussions on machine learning models and continue to explore avenues of potential collaborations.
